World Water Day

It is Word Water Day on 22d March. The United Nations General  Assembly designated this day each year as the World Day for Water

You may not have noticed it, but parts of the UK have not been getting enough rain recently.

The problem is particularly bad in Southern England. Two unusually dry winters
have left the reservoirs there only about half full. In the Thames water region,
around London, there's been less than 70% of the rainfall that was expected
 since November 2004.
This means that less water has soaked into the ground, where it is needed to feed
the wells and rivers that the water supply relies on. To help save water millions of people
living in these areas are now covered by a hosepipe ban.
The falling supply of water is becoming a big problem because we are using more water
now than ever before. Twenty years ago the average person used 140 litres a day,
today it's 163 litres and in 20 years time it's predicted to be 183 litres per person - per day.

How can I help save water?

             Here's some water saving tips:
  • Use less water by turning the hot tap down, rather than the cold tap up, if you want
         cooler water.
  • Brushing your teeth with the tap running wastes almost nine litres a minute.
Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth
  • Cool water kept in the fridge means you won't have to run the tap for ages
         to get a cold drink.
  • Just taking a five-minute shower every day, instead of a bath, will use two
thirds less water, saving up to 400 litres a week.
  •  Kettles should be filled with enough water for your needs but not to the brim.
This will reduce your fuel bills too
  • If you have a fish tank, you can make use of the dirty water produced
when cleaning it by putting it on your houseplants. It's rich in nitrogen and phosphorus.
  • Water your garden during the coolest part of the day. That way less of the water will evaporate.
  •  Don't run taps to rinse washing up
  •  Only use the washing machine and dishwashers with a full load
  •  Never leave a tap dripping
